Who is Ansvar Insurance?

  • Ansvar Insurance, a business division of Ecclesiastical Insurance Office plc, is a general insurer dedicated to working in partnership with insurance intermediaries providing tailored solutions to a variety of not-for-profit organisations who make a positive contribution to society.

The company was established in 1932 in Sweden, expanding into the UK in 1959. The word Ansvar is Swedish for ‘responsibility’ and its socially responsible ethos has been at the heart of the organisation. With its roots from within the Temperance Movement this has been the catalyst for the development of specialist commercial policies for the not-for-profit sector – charities, churches, voluntary groups and connected individuals who subscribe to a "responsible" lifestyle.

Part of a dynamic UK financial services group, Ansvar Insurance continues to pursue both an ethical investment and trading policy which precludes dealings with organisations who are predominantly involved in tobacco, alcohol, gaming and armaments. One national daily newspaper described Ansvar as a "commercial organisation with a social concern".

Ansvar's aim is to be the leading insurer for the not-for-profit sector providing innovative insurance solutions and excellent personal service.

Does the buildings cover include tarmac car parks, tennis courts, play areas and such things?

  • Yes – provided the cost of reinstating them is included within the buildings sum insured.

Am I covered for the theft of lead from the Hall roof?

  • Yes. If you have buildings cover, you are insured for the theft of external metalwork up to a limit of £25,000.

Does my cover include Libel and Slander?

  • Yes – this is included within the Public Liability section up to a limit of £500,000.

Does the policy include Trustees Indemnity cover?

  • Yes – all new policies automatically include Trustees Indemnity cover up to a limit of £100,000. This limit can be increased on payment of an additional premium.

Are special events covered?

  • Events held at the Hall will usually be covered (although see the question below regarding bonfires and firework displays). If the event is to attract a large number of people then it would be best to contact us as an additional premium may be payable. If you organise or attend an event away from the Hall, an additional premium may again be charged, depending upon the type of event and the number of people attending.

Will I be covered for firework displays?

Can insurance be provided for bouncy castles?

  • Yes – provided you meet insurers requirements – and at no cost. You must ensure that the bouncy castle is supervised at all times and that different age groups are not mixed. The three age groups are as follows: 2–5, 6–12 and over 12.

Must I complete a proposal form?

  • No – you will be sent a Statement of Fact which lists the details you have provided and the sums insured. You simply check, sign and return this it to us.

Do I have to sign up for 3 years?

  • There is no obligation to take cover for more than 12 months but a 3 year Long Term Undertaking entitles you to a substantial discount. What is more, insurers guarantee that they will not increase the premium rate during the period other than to allow for index-linking of the sums insured or adjustments requested by you. Should you make a claim, both you and the insurers are released from the Undertaking.

My present insurer shows a buildings sum insured of £1m. Is this correct?

  • It is likely that the figure of £1m represents the maximum figure to which the buildings sum insured can be increased. Unless the rebuilding value of the Hall is £1m, it is likely that a lower and more appropriate sum insured will also be shown on your documents.

Do Norris & Fisher charge fees?

  • No fees are charged on our Village Hall policies.

May I pay the premium in monthly instalments?

  • Yes – an instalment facility is available and full details will be provided to you with the quote. We are often able to arrange instalments at 0% interest.

Can the Hall be hired to users who stay overnight?

  • Generally yes – but details of numbers and activities should always be referred in advance and insurers may charge an additional premium.

Should the Hall hiring agreement require that hirers have Public Liability insurance?

  • Yes – the agreement should require this but the Norris & Fisher Village Hall scheme with Ansvar Insurance Company Limited automatically includes such cover for individuals and non profit-making groups.

Does the policy include Hirer’s Liability?

  • Yes – see previous question and answer.

How should I calculate the buildings sum insured?

  • If your sum insured is over £500,000, Ansvar Insurance Company Limited may wish to appoint a surveyor to inspect your premises and the surveyor will offer an opinion as to the correct sum insured (which should represent the cost of rebuilding the premises). Otherwise, you could seek the opinion of a builder or have your own survey done to establish the rebuilding cost. Sums insured should always allow for site clearance costs and professional fees incurred if the property has to be rebuilt. It should also be sufficient to include any additional costs incurred as a result of meeting modern building regulations.

Do I need Fidelity Guarantee cover?

  • Fidelity Guarantee provides cover for loss of money arising from fraud or dishonesty, e.g. embezzlement by an officer of the committee. Ansvar’s Village & Community Hall insurance policy can be extended to provide this cover and an additional premium will be charged. Very few of our clients opt for this cover, especially in view of the fact that the money section already provides insurance up to £500 for such losses discovered within 14 days.

I have an Employers’ Liability certificate but no certificate for Public Liability. Is this correct?

  • Employers’ Liability is a compulsory form of cover – if you have employees the law requires you to hold Employers’ Liability cover for an indemnity limit of at least £5m. Public Liability is not compulsory at law and so no certificate is issued. Under Ansvar’s Village & Community Halls insurance policy, committee members and volunteers come under the definition of “employees” and so would be covered by the Employers’ Liability section. The insurance certificate must either be displayed where it can be seen by the employees and volunteers or made easily available to them in electronic format.
