Village Hall Insurance - Summary of Cover

Village Hall Insurance provides a range of cover:

  • Accidental damage cover on buildings and/or contents, including theft; fire; lightning; explosion; aircraft; impact by vehicles, animals or falling trees; riot and civil commotion; malicious damage or vandalism; storm; flood and escape of water or oil.
  • Accidental damage to glass
  • Theft of metal from roofs up to £25,000 (excluded under many other policies)
  • Money, including assault cover if an employee or volunteer were to be attacked during an attempted theft
  • Loss of revenue cover
  • Public Liability and Property Owner’s Liability
  • Products Liability in respect of refreshments served
  • Employers’ Liability – which applies to trustees or committee members and volunteers as well as employees
  • Legal Expenses
  • Publishers’ indemnity – which provides libel cover in respect of documents produced by the committee.

There are many extensions to this basic description of cover for village hall insurance and a full summary and policy wording will be provided on request.

An excess of £100 applies to all claims except those for loss of money and subsidence. The money excess is £50 and the subsidence excess £1,000. This means that the village hall committee cannot claim for the first amount of any loss.

Trustees Indemnity insurance can usually be included at a small additional cost. This cover is designed to protect village hall trustees against damages and legal costs which arise from a “wrongful act” committed by a trustee, such as a breach of duty, breach of contract or breach of warranty. Cover can be extended to include dishonest acts committed by a trustee or officer.

Examples of incidents that would be covered under a Village Hall Insurance policy are as follows:

  • Vandals set light to a bin outside the Village Hall or Community Hall, causing damage to the buildings.
  • Someone breaks in to the Village Hall or Community Hall overnight and causes damage to the windows, which have to be replaced.
  • The treasurer is going to the bank with money from a fundraising event when he or she is mugged. The policy would pay both for the lost money and it would provide a benefit to the injured treasurer in certain circumstances.
  • A visitor to the Village Hall or Community Hall falls over on a raised doormat, breaks her arm and sues the committee. Such losses, where due to the negligence of the committee, would be covered under the Public Liability section. The policy would pay for defence costs in proving there was no negligence, where appropriate.
  • A water tank in the roof of the premises ruptures and the water damages contents. This would be covered under the terms of the policy.
  • The Village Hall or Community Hall suffers a major fire and cannot be used for several months. The policy will indemnify the committee for lost hiring fees over the period (as well as paying for the building to be repaired).
